Acne occurs in various forms and severity.Cystic acne is one of the severe forms of acne. It starts off as a normal pimple but later becomes  deep and inflamed and forms a painful sore known as cyst. Cysts feel like soft lumps under the skin and they appear to be filled with fluids. Cysts can be really painful and if not treated well can also lead to large blemishes on the skin.

The cause of cystic acne are same as any other form of acne. It is caused due to overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands which leads to clogging of the pores on the skin’s surface. Dead skin cells and skin bacteria pile up in the pores to form acne.

Who can get cystic acne? This form of acne is usually found during teenage. It is also largely hereditary. If either parent had cystic acne, chances are that the offspring may also be exposed to some form of cystic acne.

When you suffer from cystic acne its best to consult a dermatologist. Since this is a severe form of acne, and the breakouts due to cystic acne damage the healthy skin tissues, the chances of scarring the skin is very high. Hence it is advised to seek medical help to treat it.

The treatment may include use of antibiotics. If antibiotics are taken as a treatment for cystic acne, it’s important to note that the treatment should be completed for the prescribed amount of time. Leaving an antibiotic treatment halfway may result in the bacteria becoming resistant to the treatment.

Another option for the treatment of cystic acne is use of Accutane (isotrtinoin). This medication should also be taken with care since it has some adverse side effects.

For females suffering from cystic acne oral contraceptives are used as a cystic acne remedy. This is considered as a safe remedy for cystic acne and helps to suppress overactive sebaceous glands (oil producing).

In very severe cases of cystic acne, surgical procedures may also be an option.

Though treating cystic acne does require special care, people suffering from cystic acne should also take basic acne care. For instance washing the face two times a day with a mild cleanser, avoiding touching or squeezing  the pimples, and taking the necessary acne care precautions.

Cystic acne can be treated, but may require patience and perseverance. The treatments may not work like magic at first but eventually they will treat cystic acne.
